The Seven Petitions
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Simplified
Seven Petitions (2803)
The Spirit stirs up seven petitions within us. The first three (more theological) draw us to the Father's glory. The last four (ways toward him) commend our wretchedness to his grace.
First Three (2804)
The first three petitions (thy name, thy kingdom, and thy will) carry us to the Father for his own sake. We do not mention ourselves because the three petitions (hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done) are already answered in Christ's saving sacrifice. This prayer seeks their fulfillment, because God is not yet all in all.
Last Four (2805-2806)
The last four petitions (like the Eucharistic epiclesis) offer up our expectations. They concern this present world. Give us and forgive us concern our need to be fed and healed of sin. Lead us and deliver us concern our battle for the victory of life.
The first three petitions strengthen us in faith, hope, and charity. The final four concern our needs asking the Father to accomplish (through Christ and the Spirit) his plan for us and the whole world.
