Respect for Others and Self
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Simplified
Scandal - Harm Done to Others (2284-2285)
Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. Sometimes this even leads to his spiritual death. Scandal is grave if the other is led to a grave offense.
Scandal is graver if committed by those in authority or is done to those who are especially weak. Jesus condemned those who gave scandal to "the little ones" saying it would be better if they were "drowned in the depth of the sea" (Mt 18:6). Scandal coming from those who have the office of teacher is grave. Jesus called the Pharisees "wolves in sheep's clothing" (Mt 7:15).
Scandals from Society (2286-2287)
Scandal comes from laws, institutions, fashions and public opinion. Scandal is committed by "those who establish laws leading to the decline of morals or to social conditions that make obedience to the Commandments practically impossible" (Pope Pius XII). Also accountable are business leaders who encourage fraud and those who manipulate public opinion against moral values.
All who use their power to lead others astray are guilty. "Woe to him by whom scandal comes" (Lk 17:1).
Caring for Our Health (2288-2289)
We must take reasonable care of life and health. Society must provide those living conditions which promote health: education, employment, housing, health care, and social assistance. While caring for health, we must reject a cult of the body which idolizes physical perfection. Preferring the strong over the weak is a perversion of human relationships.
Alcohol and Tobacco (2290)
Temperance disposes people to avoid excesses in the use of alcohol, tobacco or medicines. Anyone who endangers their own life and the lives of others by drunk driving (or by high speeds) incurs grave guilt.
Drugs (2291)
The use of drugs inflicts serious harm. Their use (except for therapeutic reasons) is a grave offense. Selling drugs is a scandal, a serious offense and a direct cooperation in the evil of another.
