Personal Responsibility
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Simplified
Duty to Participate (1913-1915)
The dignity of the human person requires that everyone can participate in society according to their role. This demands:
- That the individual assume personal responsibility for his family, his work, and the good of others
- That citizens participate in public life
We praise those nations which permit the largest possible participation of their citizens in genuine political freedom.
Conversion (1916)
This full participation demands renewed conversion of social partners. Fraud and other subterfuges which evade the law are incompatible with justice. Also needed are institutions to improve human life.
Inspiration (1917)
Those in authority must inspire confidence in the people so they are willing to serve others. "Humanity is in the hands of those who are capable of providing people with reason for life and optimism" (Second Vatican Council).
