The CatholiCity Message
Volume VI, Number 12 – June 20, 2002
Dear CatholiCity Citizen,
We weren't planning to send you a message this week because we're still recovering internally from the technical knock-outs we suffered this month, but we wanted to let you know about four excellent Commentaries we've posted regarding the Bishop's Conference on our homepage:
(NOW POSTED IN CATHOLIC NEWSWIRE
COMMENTARY ARCHIVES UNDER "SCANDALS" LINK)
http://www.catholicity.com/commentary/
1. IN DENIAL?
We're disappointed that the U.S. bishop's failed to address the problem of dissent and homosexuality in our seminaries and priesthood during the conference. They quickly tabled a proposal by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz to investigate the causes of the scandals along these lines, leaving no doubt about their corporate lack of courage.
The four articles we've posted by Michael Novak, Mary Jo Anderson, Rod Dreher, and Lifesite.net all address the issue of homosexuality and dissent in the priesthood. You should take the time to read them. Mary Jo's "untold story" is particularly disturbing.
2. GRACE ABOUNDS
Let's all 70,000+ families receiving today's brief message pray together to the Archangel Michael for our bishops now... in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit...
"Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
3. RARELY CRITICAL
In over seven years online with CatholiCity, we can't recall publicly criticizing our bishops. Mainly, it's just not our mission and never will be. Furthermore, we're young in decades, and since we started living deeper commitment to our faith during college, we really don't remember living in a world where the vast majority of our U.S. bishops haven't struck us as anything other than wimps or liberals, with a few notable and holy exceptions.
The glaring refusal to address the real causes of the scandals in Dallas doesn't surprise us. After decades of neglect, why would they change their stripes? They are flesh and blood, like you and us, and bad habits are hard to break. It makes us laugh when the secular media portrays our bishops as a "powerful" force in our culture. Had they actually been so in the early 70s, we wouldn't have legalized abortion.
The scandals haven't affected our faith in the least, nor our calling to love our bishops even as a bride is called to love a degenerate groom, and obey him in all things but sin. Christ's bride crucified Him. We shant do the same to our bishops. We love the Catholic Church more than ever. Nothing has changed, as far as we're concerned, and that's the problem. The only thing to do is to keep praying and working, and to keep raising our children to be saints to preserve the faith into the next generation.
CatholiCity will continue to keep you informed.
We'll be back soon with a regular Message soon. We're just not in the mood for jokes. But we will be.
We remain yours...
With Christ,
