The Saints (2683)

The saints by their example, their writings, and their prayers are part of the Church's prayer Tradition. When the saints entered heaven, they were "put in charge of many things" (Mt 25:21). They intercede for us and we should seek that intercession.

Various Spiritualities (2684)

Many "spiritualities" have developed within the Church through personal charisms, as followers shared in the charism of another (as Elisha shared in Elijah's charism). A spirituality also arises through convergence of liturgy and theology (an integration of faith in a given historical environment). These distinct schools of Christian spirituality are essential guides to the faithful. "The saints are for the Spirit a place where he dwells as in his own home" (St. Basil).

Helpers in Prayer (2685-2686)

Education in prayer takes place primarily in the Christian family (the "domestic Church") where young children are awakened to the Spirit by daily family prayer.

Ordained ministers are responsible for forming people in prayer by leading them to God's Word, the liturgy, and a theological understanding.

Consecrated to Prayer (2687)

Hermits, monks, and nuns devote themselves to praising God and interceding. This consecrated life cannot be sustained or spread without prayer.

Personal Prayer (2688)

Catechesis must teach people to meditate on the Word of God and to practice personal piety. Prayers should be memorized and savored for their inner meaning.

Prayer Groups (2689)

The rise of prayer groups is a driving force for prayer renewal. These groups must drink from authentic wellsprings and always have a concern for ecclesial communion.

Spiritual Directors (2690)

The Holy Spirit gives wisdom so that some persons might become spiritual directors and true servants of the prayer Tradition. Each person must "take care into whose hands he entrusts himself" because "in addition to being learned and discreet, a director should be experienced" (St. John of the Cross).

Five Places of Prayer (2691)

The parish church is the proper place for liturgical prayer and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. A "prayer corner" (with the Scriptures and icon) fosters individual and family prayer. Monasteries help the faithful participate in liturgy and provide needed solitude. Pilgrimages can help a renewal in prayer. Shrines are special places for Christian prayer.
